Neiman Labs shares the opinions of different figures in the journalism world in regards to what they believe the industry will look like within the next year. For the year 2020, which was full of a great number of surprises, many journalists were of the opinion that the changes to come were related to technology and the medium shifts that they saw coming at the time. Joanne McNeil saw a potential return to blogs, stating that “such spaces are escape hatches from the horse-race election cycle: People are looking for those escape catches and they’re looking to create them too.” Though no one could have predicted the rise of covid-19, Joanne was completely correct in her prediction for the rising popularity of blogs. Similarly, Kerri Hoffman predicted that “As on-demand audio and podcast listening increase in 2020 and beyond, we’ll see new audiences take shape, more experiments, and deeper stories made possible by the medium.” It’s eerie to see how many of these predictions came about from a place of experience in the journalistic industry but ended up being true partly due to the ongoing pandemic which fostered a new era of creatives. In the end, journalists have to adjust to these new changes if they want to keep up with an industry that is undergoing rapid-fire changes each year as technology continues to facilitate mass communication methods and wider audiences can be reached.
