The Fake News Pandemic
Tom Rosenstiel, author and director of the American Press Institute stated that “misinformation is not like a pluming issue you can just fix. It’s a social condition, like crime, that you must constantly monitor and adjust”. Fake new is a pandemic that has spread everywhere. From journalism website, social media, and even grandmas knitting circle.
There is a multimode of reasons a person could be wanting to spread false information online. Some people might be wanting to push a certain political agenda. They hope people will take there post on face value with out needing any accredited sources to back it up. Thus, their political message will continue plaguing social media outlets from account to account. Others may be trying to discredit an actual provable fact that they do not agree with in an attempt to destroy the competition. Other however, to quote the Joker, “just want to watch the world burn”.
Luckily, there are people out there fighting to put a stop to this, or at least contain it as much as humanly possible. The University of Southern California, has put out an article that help everyday people fight this pandemic. Such as holding media companies accountable and having better quality control standards, or civilians being more selective of sites they visit and stories they chose to spread on social media.
We need to be do more research if we chose to post something on one of our social media sites, to make sure that we aren’t contributing to the problem. The is a serious issue as of late and we each need to do our best to do what we can to improve the situation.
