The Uprising of Fake News about the 2022 Oscars

Over this past weekend, some of the biggest news of this year had occurred in one of the most televised places. Actor Will Smith had slapped comedian Chris rock across the face during the Oscars on live television. Everyone in the building and at home did not know whether this was staged or the most insane thing had just happened. Everyone soon realized this was not staged. It quickly became national news and it went viral. Tiktok began making edits of the incident and Twitter began creating memes. Among people creating memes there was also a distribution of fake news. One piece of this was that the entire situation was staged and Chris Rock had a skin toned face patch on during the incident. The photo of him smiling with a face patch went viral all over Tiktok and Twitter. Many people who watched the Oscars live and knew more about this incident, knew this photo was indeed photoshopped and fake. But some viewers began to repost the altered photo and have it spiral through the internet ever more. These people were trying to manipulate the situation and cause a conspiracy theory to whether this huge situation was staged or not. People soon caught on to it being fake based off of comments saying that it was photoshopped but also the Academy comment on the situation. "The Academy does not condone violence of any form. Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Academy Awards winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and movie lovers around the world." Having a formal comment from the creators of the Oscars cleared up these false rumors. It then did create another discussion whether Will Smith should be banned and stripped of his Oscar he later received that night. A decision has not yet been made, but it still has the internet spiraling.
