The movie "All the President's Men" is based on a true story about the Watergate Scandal. I learned a lot about the Watergate Scandal watching this movie. The Watergate Scandal is a political scandal about President Nixon's abuse of power for his re-election.
We know this is a national event when Simons, the managing editor in the movie, says, "Harry, this isn't a police story anymore. This is national. We need top political writer[s] on it." We discovered it was international because money laundering was caught through Mexico for Nixon's re-election.
It is called the Watergate Scandal because one of the first events of this scandal was the attempted bugging of the Democratic National Committee headquarters. The burglars targeted a building called Watergate.
Nixon did win the re-election. But when two journalists, Bob and Carl, exposed Nixon's crimes, Nixon was impeached. This caused Nixon to resign before the impeachment held Nixon accountable for his crimes to avoid punishment.
