The Weight of Journalism

The Weight of Journalism

“If money and criminality know no boundaries, then why should journalism?” – Raney Arson-Rath. As I was reading “NeimanLabs Predictions for Journalism 2022” this quote really stood out to me. It is such a gripping statement that makes a natural skeptic like me really think about what the powers that be are keeping from us. We all know that not everything we are fed online is the truth, but what is happening to the journalist out there that just want to get the truth to the public.

Arson-Rath reports about an interview she had with current Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Ressa. Maria talks about how a journalist has not won this award since 1935 by Carl Von Ossietzky. She goes on to say that he did not get to receive his award being he was murdered in a Nazi concentration camp. Ossietzky was a Democrat who held public speaking preaching about a “peace mentality” and the president of the local chapter of German Peace Society and started his own paper. Maria brings up even more terrifying facts in stating that “We are at a point where — just like the conditions that led to World War II — we have no idea what the facts are”.

Getting the information out to the public is something that all journalist are having a struggle with especially people reporting form third world countries. Without access to technology a lot of reporter’s messages are being snuffed out by stronger forces and things are facts are getting stopped. This just increases the distrust of the public and medias relationship. Maria believes that with the advancements in technology and the availability of it more news organizations will form coalitions to ensure that facts survive.
