The Statue of Liberty is one of the most easily recognizable landmarks in the world with many unique features. The question is though, what do these characteristics mean and how do they manage to attract millions of visitors from all around the world?
As you may know, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States. It was intended to represent peace and a (hopefully) everlasting friendship between the two nations. This spirit of unity is a big reason why "approximately 3.5 million people visit the Statue of Liberty every year," according to CNN. However, there are additional interesting features of the monument that contribute to its effective public rhetoric.
One hidden, unique meaning behind the statue is the fact that the seven spikes on Lady Liberty's crown represent an equal number of the earth's continents and oceans. In addition, according to the U.S. National Park Service, her torch is intended to be a symbol of enlightenment, "the Statue of Liberty's torch lights the way to freedom showing us the path to Liberty. Even the Statue's official name represents her most important symbol, 'Liberty Enlightening the World.'"
Although some of the significance behind the Statue of Liberty, including the date of American Independence being written on her tablet, are more hidden. The majestic, peaceful features of this uniting landmark are what makes its appearance very intriguing. France sculpted the statue as a gift for the United States, and designed it in such good light that it is still able to convince millions of people to see it for themselves each year.
