With the Oscars award show happening this past week, one of the wildest and most iconic moments within Oscars history. Chris Rock, a famous comedian, made a joke about Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Jada Smith has a shaved head, and Chris Rock made a joke about her hairstyle. Will Smith would proceed to walk upon the stage and smack Chris Rock for the joke, then proceeding to swear at him, telling him to keep his wife's name out of his mouth. As this completely took over social media, people were immediate to putting Will Smith in the wrong, completely excusing Chris Rock and praising him for his mature behavior. This is where misinformation comes in. According to CNN, "Pinkett Smith has shared publicly that she has alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss on the scalp and elsewhere," Since it was something that was out of her control, it probably made her self-esteem lower and more conscious about her hair. Without context, it seems that Chris Rock was completely excused, but with context, Chris Rock is also wrong for joking about something that someone cannot control. This is where the misinformation and jumping to conclusions part of the internet comes in. Without prior context, Will Smith would have been labeled as an enemy. This reminds us that we should know all the facts before making assumptions.
