Around the world, there are 1.2 million KNOWN species around the world. However, scientists estimate there to be 8.2 million species on earth. It is crazy how much we know about wildlife, and yet how much we still are yet to learn. What we know now is only roughly ¼ of what is out there in the world. I personally think wildlife journalists have the coolest job in the world! They get to travel all around the world, and interact with all kinds of animals and observe them in their natural habitat. However, this is only a part of their job. Sharon Guynup is an environmental/science editor and writer who has written for many newspapers. She has traveled through Asia, South America, and Africa to cover wildlife, ecosystems, and climate change. In recent times, she has been writing and confronting “wildlife crimes. In 2016, she held an investigation into the Thai tiger temple which is a famous place in Thailand. She published strong allegations of illegal wildlife trade stretching back a decade, which forced the Thi to shut down their program completely. The tiger temple closed down in 2016 due to finds of dead cubs, tiger skins and teeth. The organization was found guilty of drugging their animals and being abusive towards them. There was also evidence of illegal animal trade of tiger fur. Sharon fought long and hard for the government to notice and take action against these heartless crimes. Sharon believes "journalists need to do more to cover wildlife and environmental crime," for the improvement of wildlife.
Many wildlife journalists such as Sharon are using articles and photos to convey the value of animals. Some pictures and articles use emotional ties to connect with their audience, while others use creditable facts to share news such as animal abuse.
