A Great Man Once Said...

I'm sure you've all seen those photos on Google that contain a beautiful image of a scene in nature and an inspirational quote. The captions usually attribute the quote to Gandhi, or Confucius, or some other historical figure known for their wisdom. Despite their appealing aesthetic, however, these quotes are often misattributed, modified, or entirely made up. I can not tell you how many times I have tried to find an interesting quote for a paper, only to do some research later and discover that it was false. One example of this is a quote that I found that is commonly attributed to C.S. Lewis on the internet: "Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less." In several places, it was said this was from Lewis' book Mere Christianity, but after a quick look through the book itself, I discovered that the quote was nowhere to be seen. A short trip to the C.S. Lewis Foundation's website confirmed my suspicion that this was never said by Lewis, but rather by a man named Rick Warren in a completely separate book. While in this specific case I used a separate website, one helpful resource for investigating quotes is the Quote Investigator blog. It's not an exhaustive source, but it can be useful in some cases. In general, however, the best way to avoid misquoting someone is always to double-check your information and find the quote's original source.
