50 years ago, the nation held its breath at it cheered for the slim odds for the survival of 3 men stranded hundreds of thousands of kilometers from any safety or protection. With limited supplies and a dwindling supply of oxygen, chances of survival were low. Following a horrible explosion of an oxygen tank after their launch, NASA began a mad scramble to try and save the lives of the three men stranded onboard the 160 cubic feet command module without any safety nets. Thanks to some fancy engineering from NASA, scientists were able to right new CO2 filters that would last until landing "utilizing spacesuit hoses, plastic bags and duct tape", according to space.com.
