Fake news an issue that grown dramatically throughout the past few years. The spread of fake news seems to be unstoppable as it spreads so quickly and when people are exposed to it, they are not too keen on believing that it is false. With the growing issue of fake news and misinformation, the question of how it can be stopped arises. Some social media apps have been accused of censoring false information and those that spread the information, but they have also taken the power a little bit too far as some of the information may not be false, or it might even be an opinion, which is someone’s beliefs and therefore cannot be right or wrong. It is well agreed upon that censorship is a slippery slope when it comes to fighting fake news, but there may be other solutions. According to Emily Gersema from the University of Southern California, “social media users need to be put on an information diet,” this means is that instead of censoring the content that people see on social media, companies should focus on showing less news on their apps. This can reduce the spread of fake news because it also reduces the amount of information that users see. Which makes this an “eye for an eye” sort of situation. The reduction of misinformation comes as a result of the reduction of all information.
