Apple News vs. Google News

Apple News and Google News are two extremely popular news outlet apps that are both available on IOS products. Both outlets cover a variety of issues ranging from politics to sports. In addition, they both include articles from various other sources such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, CNBC, and CNN. Today, we will dive into some rhetorical strategies each app uses.

Apple News utilizes pathos by headlining emotionally-charged headlines. Today (4/29/2020), the top stories include "Mass Layoffs Begin in Cities and States Amid Coronavirus Fallout" and "Chinese Man Who Loves Exotic Food Sees His Lungs Riddled with Worms." These headlines are designed to cause a reaction among viewers. This is quite common among news networks, because the more jarring the headline, the more likely it is to be clicked on. On a positive note, the news categories are conveniently split up. There are various articles fractured into separate categories like entertainment, pop culture, and even Covid-19 updates. This is a great way for the company to give users ease of navigation. Overall, Apple News' strength lies in the diversity of the articles available. I appreciate how the outlet features many reports from varying companies with differing opinions.

Google News functions very similarly to Apple News. On the main page, "Breaking News" headlines are featured front and center. Today, the main headlines include articles titled "It’s going to go away”: Trump’s blind faith won’t solve America’s coronavirus testing problem" and "Joe Biden is not Hiding. He's Lurking." These articles are both designed to cause a reaction from the audience, just like the reports on Apple News. Google News also has a nice feature that showcases local news. Due to this, users are kept up-to-date about events and issues going on in their own areas. In addition, I do believe that Google News showcases articles that are less biased (overall) than those on Apple News.

For the most part, there is not a huge difference between Apple News and Google News. Both outlets utilize pathos, split their news articles up into sections, and provide reports from various additional outlets. However, Google News does have a cleaner look and feel. Based on aesthetics and the articles that are generally featured, I choose to use Google News. What would you choose?
