Asian American Journalist uses her experience with discrimination to educate

mmcneal55

Erika Lee, a news reporter in Boise Idaho is a part of the very small minority of asian women in local news for that area. She introduces her article with the racist, explicit name-calling she experienced fresh into her field of work. She explained how the racist environment in that community took a toll on her. “I spent the next few days after the Atlanta shootings crying. It sucks when you want to take a break from the news, but you can’t because you are the news” She used emotional rhetoric to appeal to her empathetic audience so she could later explain the rise in anti-asian hate crimes with context. Lee used her position as a news anchor and member of the Asian American Journalists Association to raise awareness and support those who received counseling related to racially motivated attacks.
