On March 2, 2021, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that mask mandate will be lifted and all types of business will be able to open with 100% capacity. Allowing business to have full capacity is understandable because it’s been a hard time for everyone, especially for local business.
However, lifting mask mandate seems a bit crazy for me and some other people because it is too soon for that. Not everybody got their vaccines yet. Some people still struggle to sign up for their shots and the amount of available vaccines is still limited. Gov. Greg Abbott said, “it is clear from the recoveries, vaccinations, reduced hospitalizations, and safe practices that Texans are using that state mandates are no longer needed” (Office of the Texas Governor). In reality, this is not true. Based on my experience while working at a store, there are a lot of people who still don’t believe in the effects or consequences of COVID-19. They said, “it’s only like a flu to me. I had it. I was fine. It’s not that scary at all.” Or somebody would be like: “If you put a gun on my head, I still wouldn’t wear a mask. It’s useless.” Meanwhile, for some people, it’s tragic for them as they witness their parents or grandparents die due to COVID-19.
