Beware of the "Share" Button

The spreading of fake news has become so widespread that there are researchers whose sole purpose is figuring out how to identify it on a larger scale. There is a common theme behind the route misinformation seems to take: the profiles of the people engaging in it. In "The Role of User Profiles for Fake News Detection," the researchers first analyze social media users sharing habits and how often they share real vs. fake news, then "perform a comparative analysis of explicit and implicit profile features between these user groups, which reveals their potential to help differentiate fake news from real news."

Other researchers came up with a similar model, in which part of the formula to creating a system to detect fake news involves examining the group of people sharing it. This profiling will probably raise more questions than answers in the battle against misinformation.
