In 2021, Myanmar has faced a hostile governmental takeover organized by high-ranking officials within their own military. A war between the military and protestors has come alongside the coup, leading to a target on journalists’ backs. Since the military has overtaken the government, they have issued a decree, banning journalists from describing the situation as a “coup, regime, and junta.” In order to further their control on published news, they crippled communications within the nation, “cutting off mobile data service” and targeting journalists who report the events. At least 56 journalists so far have been arrested, and many have been shot and killed. By limiting the press, the Myanmar military is leaning into Orwellian territory that could rightfully be called a dystopia.
