Instagram is a social networking app that primarily focuses on sharing pictures. Your home page is a feed of posts from people you follow, as well as a few paid promotions sprinkled in (as seen in the photo below). The home page used to be reverse chronological order, meaning you’d see the latest posts from people you follow. However, in an effort to keep users on the app for longer, the Instagram home page is now full of posts that Instagram’s algorithm thinks you want to see. On https://wolfglobal.org/instagram-explore-page/ , they explain the explore page by stating, “Instagram as a platform wants all its users to be super active and engaging. In order to ensure that keeps on happening – they track what posts you like and comment on, what videos and stories you check out and based on that they show you content that they think you’ll end up interacting with.” (WolfGlobal 1). Posts are put into your home page based on whether or not you engage a lot with that account or not. This means that if one of your friends that you follow hasn’t posted in a while and you haven’t interacted with their profile in a while, you may continue to not see anything from them due to Instagram not wanting to recommend you their posts. In addition to this tailored home page, Instagram also has an explore page filled with posts that it thinks you might like from people that you don’t necessarily follow.
