Blog Post 5, Finding Fake News

Fake News is a relatively recent issue that has come about with the new ease of access to social media. With social media sites like Facebook, it’s easier than ever to spread information with no basis and get that information shared and reposted to multiple circles of people. While it's hard to reverse the spread of false information once it's already begun, I learned a lot from "How To Spot Fake News" on ways to prevent it. The most helpful thing for me as a writer was knowing to consider the source when viewing information. In the article they state, "In recent months, we’ve fact-checked fake news from abcnews.com.co (not the actual URL for ABC News (Links to an external site.)), WTOE 5 News (whose “about” page says it’s “a fantasy news website”), and the Boston Tribune (whose “contact us” page lists only a gmail address)." (Kiely & Robertson 1). By just examining a website's URL more closely or by investigating their page, you can figure out if the source is really credible or not. For example, the article states that websites pose behind believable URLs such as “abcnews.com.co”, when the actual URL for ABC News is https://abcnews.go.com/ .
