Bots: A Hidden Influencer

The more social media becomes interconnected with our lives, the more we are at risk of receiving fake news. What we fail to realize is where this fake news stems from. In a study conducted by Chengcheng Shao, “Shao and co monitered some 400,000 claims made by these” fake news sources” and “studied the way it spread through Twitter” (Emerging Technology, 2017). What they found was that the AI bots were targeting influential users. By optimizing their chance to spread information, they risk deception rather than factual information. A lot of strategies they may use is more aggressive language in order to both grab the viewers attention and draw attention to the false information. They also use an overload of hashtags to widen their network.
