Carrying the Banner

“In 1899, the streets of New York City echoed with the voices of newsies, peddling the papers of Joseph Pulitzer, William Randalph Hearst, and other giants of the newspaper world. On every corner you saw them carrying the banner. Bringing you the news for a penny a paper. Poor orphans and runaways, the newsies were a ragged army without a leader, until one day all that changed.” Newsies 1992.

Newsies, is a famous Broadway musical that hit the big screen in 1992. This film illustrates the power of the Media, in its substantial influence on swaying public opinion. The movie takes place at a time when people were paying pennies for the papers, and 'newsies,' delivered the 'papes'. A time when the big publishers like Pulitzer and Hearst, had a monopoly over the news industry, when prices started going up, and newsies were required to fit the new standard of paper delivery of these large publishers, they refused. They began a strike, and through the help of one journalist and brave reporting, their strike became a revolution that eventually caught the attention of the world and changed policy! Headlines! Carrying the banner! The newsies would sell their papers shouting the latest headlines! Strong, bold, brave journalism, even when you are up against a well equipped opposition can change the world!
