Catering to Generation Z

CollinStudent01

As Generation Z begins to join the workforce and become more prominent voices in society, the media has struggled to understand how to engage with them and share the information they deem relevant. According to Nico Gendron, author of "Make better products if you want to reach Gen Z," has taken note of the struggle news outlets face and urge them to change their business models.

It's obvious that there has always been a disconnect between generations. Like any generation, nobody understands a Gen Z like another Gen Z. Yet, companies still turn to the older generations to create content for young people and wonder why they are not getting the results they intended.

Gendron notes this, and advises companies of ways to connect to Generation Z. This includes employing younger people to produce material for each other, prioritizing content that is "visual-first, and predominantly video-first". As a fellow Gen Zer, I can attest to Gendron's claim. I and many of my peers often search for content that is quick and easy to digest while I am going about my day, mostly through social media and apps. So if news outlets really want to reach us they are going to have to update the approach.
