Combating Fake News: Has Facebook Done Anything to Stop Misinformation?

When looking back on 2020, one of the biggest complaints came from the spread of fake news throughout different social media outlets. This issue seemed to significantly affect how these outlets dealt with crackdowns on censorship and what they deemed as misinformation. Statements from Facebook recorded in the article "How Fake News Could Impact the 2020 Presidential Election," by Christina Georgacopoulos and Grayce Mores, shows the initiative Facebook took ahead of the election. Trying to stop the predictive epidemic of fake news thought to plague the site during the election, Facebook took the issue seriously at the end of 2019. During this indicative, Facebook promised to "better identify new threats, close vulnerabilities and reduce the spread of viral misinformation and fake accounts" (Georgacopoulos, and Mores, 2020). To combat the spread of misinformation, the Social Media site also came up with some strategies such as "Combating inauthentic behavior, Labeling State-controlled media, and Making it easier to understand political ads" (Georgacopoulos, and Mores, 2020). This attempt to help their users be more aware of the information they are consuming, shows the importance of the use of critical thinking while using different sites on the internet.
