COVID-19 and Facebook

Writer's picture: Kyle NesmithKyle Nesmith

The Coronavirus has taken the world by storm and has changed countless lives in the past month. The virus has flooded all news sites and even made its way into nearly everybody's social media feeds, including Facebook. Facebook has already been notorious for spreading "fake news" through its ads that are displayed. This issue has only grown with the introduction of the Coronavirus. This has forced Facebook to take action and warn its users of the potential exposure to these fake news articles. An article by The Guardian says, "Facebook will begin showing notifications to users who have interacted with posts that contain “harmful” coronavirus misinformation." Facebook hopes that notifying its users of these potential threats of misinformation will help its users keep their eyes out for more potential threats. Though this is a step in the right direction I still think Facebook has a long way to go to end their "fake news" reputation.
