Dan Patrick is Downplaying the Threat of COVID-19

David Goss

Over the past week, Lieutenant Governor of Texas Dan Patrick released the following statement when asked to clarify what he meant when he claimed that he and other senior citizens should be willing to catch COVID-19 and die from it. In an interview with Fox News, Patrick said, "'there are more important things than living” like “saving this country for my children and my grandchildren, and saving this country for all of us.” Personally, I do not think that his intent of this statement was to encourage the citizens of America to disregard the value of life. I believe that he, like Cynthia M. Allen stated, "is referring to the very American idea that creating a better life for our kids often demands willing sacrifices." Regardless of the emotional intent of his message, it still is foolish to reopen Texas and America overall as there is no telling how long it will take until the country and world is back to normal.
