Miles Parks, an NPR reporter, discusses in detail the very real presence of disinformation in the year 2020. As the COVID-19 pandemic worsened throughout the year, "Americans... [started to spend] more than 13 total hours per day engaging with some sort of tech or media" (par. 19). This led to an increase of Americans receiving information about the presidential election and also the worldwide pandemic from social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. Social media has long been known as a place to spread disinformation. However, as time progressed in 2020, there was a rise in "not just election-related disinformation... [bt also] false narratives about the coronavirus pandemic" (par. 27). As the world becomes more reliant on the internet combatting disinformation and fake news seems to be becoming a serious issue.
