Division of Perspectives

Journalism is facing a major problem that, unfortunately, plagues the modern world. At the core of the industry now lays a huge division between different news organizations. One after the other, it seems as if one must label the news providers as either liberal or conservative, which ultimately, decides viewership. No longer is the standard by the greatness and talent of the journalist or how good their work is in investigating the truth, but rather, by the perspectives held by the viewer. This has usually always been the case to a point, however, now there are so many more factors that go far beyond political preference.

In today’s environment, social and cultural preferences also contribute to what type of news organizations individuals relate to because “racial, cultural, and religious identities have come to overlap with our political identities to such a huge extent, that polarization operates on a social – and even primal – level." News consumption has become more about what a person wants to hear than what they need to hear. The creation of these media safe spaces has now become a major problem within journalism. Instead of being a credible industry, journalism is now a tool that helps certain organizations appeal to a valued group of people.
