With countless established & still emerging social media apps, it's hard to figure out which is best for you. There are a few things to consider, though, like an app's popularity, ease of navigation, and contents. According to a poll done by Statista in September 2019, Facebook led with 169.76 million users, Instagram had 121.23 million, Twitter had 81.87 million, and Snapchat trailed with 45.98 million users.
For those new to social media, what does each app offer? Here's a short list:
Facebook; post (upload) pictures, thoughts, videos, news stories, & quizzes to your personal newsfeed; react to, comment on, or share (forward) other people's stories; request friends & accept friend request from others; shop; watch videos, movies, & tv shows; also a source for credible and fake news
Twitter: "tweet" (post) videos, pictures, voice memos, or thoughts; also a source for credible and fake news; choose to "follow" (keep up with) people
Instagram: take pictures, upload pictures, & add filters to pictures; comment to other people's pictures; post videos; send private messages; recently added is the ability to shop via links
Snapchat: send a "snap" (picture); send a snapchat (message); upload pictures of videos to your personal story (timeline), and look through friends' stories
TikTok: upload videos (up to 60 second in length); create voiceovers as videos; watch other people's videos (no need to be friends); like, comment, & share other people's videos
YouTube: upload and watch videos; subscribe to "YouTubers" (content creators) & be notified when new content is available to watch; like & comment on people's videos
Jim Akin from Experian gives 9 tips on social media safety. "Social media outlets...are great for staying in touch with family and friends, but remember: cyber-scammers and identity thieves are on those platforms too" (Akin). Again, there are other apps, & the choice is yours. Remember, whichever app(s) you choose, use caution & guard your personal information.
