Economic Doomsday

The Covid-19 outbreak has undeniably brought on an economic disaster. Millions have lost their jobs, businesses, and savings amidst the crisis. Many Americans are wondering if shutting down the nation was worth it, and how much longer this will go on. I spoke with some members of a North Texas community about how the pandemic has effected their lives.

Local businessman and dentist, Dr. Aaron Horsley, has described this time as "a universal tragedy." On March 31st, the Texas government mandated all non-emergency dental procedures be suspended, which forced Dr. Horsley and his entire staff to file for unemployment. The dentist went on to explain that he has "no idea how [he] will pay for the business loans and bills over the next few months." Unfortunately, small business owners are among the hardest hit during the nation-wide quarantine.

Federal, state, and local governments have teamed up to create safety nets for businesses during this time, but many suspect it is not enough. Dr. Horsley's wife and business finance manager, Mrs. Rachel Horsley, spent the past few weeks tirelessly filing for government aid. Despite her efforts, the massive volume of requests the government received for small-business disaster loans (PPP loan) caused them to run out of funds in a matter of days. Now, Mrs. Horsley describes that "all we can do is wait and hope for the best." When deciding to venture out and start their own dental office, the Horsley's never suspected that a global pandemic could mean the end of their business.

Many are using this time to question whether choosing to shut down businesses was the right thing to do. Was the risk worth the reward? Is there a better way the United States could have gone about this crisis? Still, we must tread on during these times towards the light at the end of the tunnel...
