Facebook: Separating News Feeds from Personal Posts

When people think of the top social media platforms, Facebook is definitely one of the companies they think of. This is due to the fact that Facebook has been around for about sixteen years and has an average of 1.66 billion daily users. Just like almost every other social media platform, Facebook offers easily accessible news feeds and stories for their users to view. However, the company has to find a balance between sharing news and personal posts. In an article posted by Facebook, the product manager, Mona Sarantakos, and Campbell Brown, VP, explained that "People want and benefit from personalized experiences on Facebook, but we know there is reporting that transcends individual experience. We want to support both." This led the company to come up with a possible solution.

When a Facebook user logs into their account, they can choose what they want to view. The app has separated out the news section from the personal posts. This means that people that just use the service to see what their friends are up to do not have to view a bunch of news stories when that isn't what they want. However, people that also want to view the news can easily access the trending news in their area as well as around the world. Also, this news section of the app has their articles separated out into categories so people can view exactly want they want without having to scroll through a generalized feed that they might not find interesting at all. One of these categories is a personalized to the user by picking out articles that are related to ones they have read in the past.
