During the 2016 election season, tensions were high and accusations to both candidates were being thrown around at random. One of these accusations was directed to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her team. The fake news article said that a pizza shopped in Washington D.C. called Comet Ping Pong was the hot spot for a pedophilic sex ring that the Clintons were running. One reader took this fake news seriously and ended up bringing a gun to the restaurant "in a busy but peaceful shopping district, and the shop was filled with families" in an attempted shooting. This man was apparently right-wing, as was the one behind the fake news. This fake news was so effective in its rhetoric because it put together something everyone hates, which is pedophilia and sex trafficking, with something Republicans hated, which was Clinton.
