Fake news has grown and is becoming more common when our society is trying to receive our news. Fake news is when information that is being changed or left out is being spread as news. Fake news can be spotted in articles, websites, books, etc. Fake news gets more attention than news that is 100% true. Why do people make and spread fake news? According to the article, Beasley declared that “It all begins with understanding what drives people to create, accept, and share false information in the first place.” There has to be some kind of motive that motivates these people to create and spread misinformation. Fake news has two main purposes. The first main purpose is to get a certain group of people's attention. Sources like the University of Notre Dame’s facility in the Center for Network and Data Science have noticed that certain topics get more attention than others. For example, COVID-19 is a good example of a topic that articles and other sources can use to get a certain group’s attention. The second main purpose of fake news is to be bias. According to the article, Beasley stated that “The research team discovered that less than a quarter (23.6%) of the articles published on the virus came from relatively unbiased sources.” That means the majority of the sources that reported on COVID-19 were being biased. There are several ways to try and stop fake news from spreading and getting attention. According to the article, Beasley revealed that one way to stop the spread of misinformation is to “foster a healthy news diet.” Looking outside our comfort zone can help us find reliable sources that are unbiased and not fake.
