Fake News: Social Media

Eric Barroso

People enjoy social media so much because it is an escape from the real world. This makes it very addicting as many people like to escape from their problems and like to feel connected with others at all times. Because people use social media so much, fake news can travel through it very fast. Additionally, social media users often give credibility to sources based off likes, views, or shares. This is a big reason fake news spreads like wildfire through social media. In the same article from my last post, titled "Fake News: How to Spot It," the author states, "Social media's ability to show a large number of news items in a short time means that users might not take the time to research and verify each one." I find this to be true as I often encounter fake news on social media that spreads quickly just because it has a lot of likes. For example, the hashtag "World War 3" was very popular all over social media several months ago and got many people worried that it had actually started. In order to combat this, people cannot trust what they see just because it has a lot of likes or views, instead, they should make sure to do further research on the things they see that actually catch their attention.
