One of the biggest crises I have ever faced is currently ongoing. This is the Coronavirus Crisis. Coronavirus is evidently one of the worst things our planet has faced in the past 20 years. It has changed the way we live, socialize, and behave. Everyone understands how we transmit the virus and are implementing ways to stay safe, but something we do not yet understand is where does the virus come from? Sure, we know how to prevent it and are finding ways to treat it, but where is the original source of the virus? One thing for sure is, it is not from bats, or so it seemed at first. When the Coronavirus was making headlines, I had seen hundreds of reports, memes, and ignorant comments that stated it came from bats. This was because of how the news detailed their reports. One major news that recently reported this was Time.com. Time uploaded an article that was titled, “The Coronavirus Originated in Bats and Can Infect Cats, WHO Scientist Says.” After reading the information provided on the site immediately after the headline, I noted that they stated, “ A World Health Organization scientist said Covid-19 comes from bats and can infect cats and ferrets, but more research is needed into the suspected animal link to the disease.” With this quote I wonder as to why the news is scaring people into believing something that has lack of evidence and data. This is not real news until it is proven and by stating this, it makes it fake news. Time used someone with credibility to give significance to their headline and contradicts it immediately after. The credibility alone is what makes a reader believe in a bold title without investigating more into the claim.
