We are constantly being trained on how to spot fake news. This has now become a responsibility for anyone producing fake news in countries who have made it a punishable crime. Countries such as Singapore have put restrictions on what people can post online by making it a punishable crime. Singapore ministers strongly supported this law because it provided them an advantage to stop news that would possibly hurt them. This tactic was a selfish attempt from the government to have powers over what their citizens say online. Does this law benefit the government leaders or the public more? As noted in the East Asia Forum, “Governments in the region have justified such laws in the name of preserving national security.” Other political leaders have responded to Southeast Asian countries who utilize this law, calling this a restriction on freedom of speech. This restriction could potentially benefit people, but people will find a way to spread fake news. The better solution is to practice distinguishing fake news when you come across it.
