From Spoken Words to OSINT: Transition in Journalism

The history of journalism begins with people transferring information among themselves by using spoken words. In other words, time before the invention of printing press, the only tool of transferring news or information was through spoken words. Over the course of time, the invention of press, radio, television, media, internet has made it easier to inform people of the surrounding events. One of the most revolutionary inventions in the history of journalism is the internet because internet has provided with extensive opportunities to look up for information or a piece of news digitally. In today’s world, OSINT, that is Open Source intelligence, is like the most expensive birthday present that journalists adore worldwide. To be more specific, OSINT is the digitalized essential tool for online journalism that helps journalists to collect public information online. Today, Journalists can come across any breaking news online just by searching through social media platforms like Twitter, or Facebook. For example, when journalists find out about a breaking news, they depend on the online resources instead of being personally present at the scene. Thanks to internet and social media, collecting news has become easier for today’s journalists than ever before. According to Beth Daley, editor and general manager of The Conversation, a nonprofit media organization, “due to social media Journalists don’t have to physically bang on doors but can scan the profiles of those who were caught up in tragic events, and set up interviews or find “collects” (family photos) without ever having to leave a newsroom.”
