News papers are more successful when the layout is aesthetically pleasing, meaning the text and visuals on the page must be arranged in a way that intrigues the reader to continue consuming the news.
The Birmingham News, from Alaska, is an example of a news paper that is not pleasing at a first glance. The large amount of plain text compared to visual ratio makes the paper look boring. The picture in the article also is a plain field, which sparks little to no interest in the reader as well. The subtitle "What in the world is that smell?" isn't very intriguing as well because it doesn't concern the reader.
On the other hand, The Epoch Times: Chinese Los Angeles Edition uses a much better layout as the title, headings, and subheadings are colored in a fancy font. The picture of the map immediately grabs the attention of its readers along with the politician beside it. It makes the reader question what is going on in the world, and therefore intrigues the reader to keep reading.
Overall, the flashy images and colorful text of The Epoch Times layout is far more superior to the plain, boring layout of The Birmingham News. This brings more attraction to the newspaper overall.
