Our homes are supposed to be the place where we feel the safest. Gated communities tend to "offer an extra sense of safety and security that you don't find in an open neighborhood." The idea of gates outside of a neighborhood is a public rhetoric as it appeals to people to be protected. Studies about gated communities are mixed. Some suggest that they lower crime while other studies suggest that gated communities didn't have protection against crime and rather just slowed police response time. However, the idea of having a gate between your home and the rest of the world somehow just feels safer, making it a public rhetoric.
