Gender Inequality in Journalism

Updated: Jun 21, 2020

The Equal Rights Amendment guarantees equal opportunity at work place for all American citizens regardless of sex. The amendment was proposed to the United States constitution in twentieth century. It may sound surprising but women in 21st century are still facing inequality in different job sectors. What about journalism? According to Corinne Segal, an editor of PBS News, "In broadcast newsrooms, women make up 31 percent of news directors and 20 percent of general managers, based on 2014 survey by the Radio Television Digital News Association." The harsh truth of gender inequality is reflected on the experience of Jessica Evans, a journalist of British national newspaper, The Independent. She claims, "when i came to work for high fashion magazines, I quickly learnt in the beginning stages of my career, wherever I went, that there was a permanent dark shadow of class discrimination in journalism. It was as if my posh colleagues and editors viewed me as less educated as a working-class woman, less “on-trend” as a northerner, and therefore, less able." What is the reason behind this gender gap in journalism? Corinne Segal, an editor of PBS News, asserts, "one factor in this disparity is that more men than women hold hard news beats such as politics and world news." Is it really true? Women work as hard as men, still they are being discriminated because they do not publish hard-core news headlines. Millennial women are more educated than men. According to the data from www.statista.com about 36.6 percent of women in the United States had completed four years or more of college in 2019, whereas, 35.4 percent of the U.S. male population had completed four years or more of college. With all these data showing higher rate of educated women, it is high time that women took over men's status of hard-core news reporter. It is high time women got as equal treatment as men in the field of journalism.
