Laura Davis’ post, “Know the context your journalism is operating within” in NiemanLab was refreshingly honest about the way journalism has changed over the years and her predictions for 2020. Her post is about going with the flow of journalism, and how journalists’ influence has diminished. The public has access to so much information and they know so much now, they are now “annotators of what the public knows, rather than the agenda setters”.
Context is important. Figuring out how to stay relevant and transparent is the only way to win the public’s attention. One interesting thing journalists have changed is their coverage of mass murder events. The trend has been less of a tendency to blast the perpetrator’s name and face across all outlets—context matters.
