Gun Violence

On March 14, 2018, one month after the shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, thousands of students participated in a National School Walkout to protest gun violence. “Students exercised their First Amendment rights in a number of ways to protest gun violence and remember the 17 Parkland victims.” During the protest, many students wore orange, held signs, and taped their mouths to draw attention. In order to honor the 17 victims, students held 17 minutes of silence. Many public schools allowed their students to walk out, however, some schools “said it would be disruptive and threatened disciplinary action if students chose to walk out or leave the school campus.” A March for Our Lives, on March 24, was organized by the survivors of the Parkland shooting. “The march in Washington and cities across the USA called on Congress to take action on gun violence and school safety.”
