Hackers have been posting fake news stories on real news sites in Eastern Europe. The article “Hackers Broke Into Real News Sites to plant Fake Stories'' goes into detail about how the hackers were able to log in and how the problem was resolved. This disinformation has been going on since March of 2017. The hackers are a part of a campaign called FireEye and “has spread false stories about US military aggression, NATO soldiers spreading coronavirus, NATO planning a full-on investigation of Belarus, and more” (Greenberg par. 3). FireEye's plan is to plant a wedge between NATO and citizens of Eastern Europe and hints to Russia possibly being involved.
