Harmful Media Coverage

Charity

Assistant professor, Laura Davis, sees journalism to be a very difficult task in the year of 2020 because of, "media consolidation, layoffs, general financial bleakness, rampant mistrust among a hopelessly divided public, all combined with the proliferation of mis- and disinformation in a presidential election year." https://www.niemanlab.org/2020/01/know-the-context-your-journalism-is-operating-within/

Davis works with journalists of the future and tries to instill into them to be able to observe their surroundings and adapt to them instead of trying to compete for the status quo. One of the ways to be able to adapt is by responding to the media landscape rather than simply operating in it, which is known as context-dependent. She believes all journalists should care more about the effect they have on the audience watching and should put effort in promoting a better way forward. She predicts that the 2020 election coverage and media manipulation will have worsen from the last election in 2016.
