Headline or Backline?

Nathan Cook

When looking at news headlines on countless daily newspapers across the U.S., I noticed the most eye-catching were those with bold lettering, colorful pictures, and less small paragraphs or descriptions. The few bold, intriguing words and phrases with a unique picture accompanying was what tended to get my attention. After searching sources for what makes a good headline, I found that the best headlines are "5-10 words at most" and are "accurate and specific." It is also advised that you use "present tense and active verbs" and "avoid repetition and redundancy." These factors along with quality imagery make a headline truly pop. Many of the states' newspapers followed these guidelines and it made the headlines easier to understand and more noticeable.
