Hijacking the Media

As technology paves the way for the future, criminals are using it to their advantage. When John Keefe, an investigations editor at Quartz, was asked to predict what he thinks is in store for the future of journalism, his answer was worrying. He cautioned, "We’re all watching for novel ways bad actors might mess with the presidential election. But our own industry is vulnerable, too." He is referring to hackers and that their ability to manipulate the public with false information may be increasing.

After doing some research I found an alarming example. In 2011 hackers took control of Fox News' Twitter account and posted a message stating that Obama had been "assassinated." Events like this could result in serious chaos and damage reputations. Hackers gaining control of news outlets and using rhetoric with malicious intent pose a serious threat to journalism. Misinformation is already a major problem and if hackers keep gaining power, the news industry could be crippled in the future.
