Houston, This is Goodbye

Sloan Jackson

The front pages of many newspapers covered the last space shuttle launch that occurred on July 8, 2011. This was the 135th launch for NASA when Atlantis lifted from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Atlantis, like other space shuttles “carried crews that launched and repaired satellites, conducted research, and built and resupplied the International Space Station.” NASA had 4 other reusable space shuttles: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, and Endeavor. The flight in 2011, was the 33rd flight for Atlantis and the 37th mission to orbit the space station. Atlantis made its final landing on July 21, 2011. While many papers had the last space shuttle flight on the cover, others covered the death of former first lady Betty Ford.
