In NY Times "Some Movies Actually Understand Poverty in America'', the directors highlight times in struggles in movies and documentaries like "Where is Kyra?" that tells a story "...about an unemployed, divorced Brooklyn woman falling through the cracks of the social safety net...". Of course, the film makers get these storylines influenced by real life events that'll depict a situation that actually occurred. This therefore evokes empathy for the audience watching to be reminded that real life hardships are being faced. Even so, film makers incorporate a sense of relatedness in fictional films that may also grasp a main idea of a sort. They make sure to include environmental backgrounds to show and empathize with the viewer further.
