How Media Tries to get Attention

Writer's picture: Savannah Campbell Savannah Campbell

Media tries to gain attention through pictures and titles. I compared two different front pages, the first from "St Mary to Replace ER provider" by Hayley Munguia and the second from "Students Walk out Over Gun Violence" both found on the website "Newseum.com" . For the students walking out newspage, it depicts a gate being opened and a bunch of students walking out, with the title stating "Can't Hold Us Back" now, the title paired with the image is meant to pique the readers interest, and to read more to find our what the topic is about. The first front page is meant to spark a bit of shock and outrage due to the title. This is so that readers will delve into the article, the paper is actually about how a hospitals contracts are about to expire, something completely normal, but is not framed to read that way in the headline. Overall, the second is less misleading than the first by headline and accompanying picture alone.
