Humans of New York is a project started by photographer Brandon Stanton in 2010. He set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers in an attempt to catalog portraits of the city's inhabitants in a photoblog. Stanton says "somewhere along the way, I began to interview my subjects in addition to photographing them. And alongside their portraits, I'd include quotes and short stories from their lives." Employing the rhetorical strategy pathos, he has a talent of using words and unfiltered photographs to captivate readers and in them, spark an emotional connection to his subjects. His project grew over the years and he has now traveled to over 20 different countries to tell stories from around the world. He has also done focused series such as "Refugee stories" featuring European refugees during the Middle East crisis, and "Inmate stories" featuring inmates from five different federal prisons in the U.S. He has published two best-selling books with collections of his work and another one is being released in the fall of 2020. He has a large following with over 17 million followers on Facebook and over 10 million followers on instagram. Overall he's been very successful in appealing to readers emotion in order to share the stories of many people.
