“Calling it a crisis isn’t enough (if it ever was)” Candis Callison.
Journalists in 2021 have an ever growing struggle to emphasize the importance of events that qualify as crises when the past year was overrun with “once in a lifetime” occurrences. From the spread of Covid-19 to forest fires, 2020 was filled with issues that stemmed from systematic flaws. The true problems came from what the public deemed as important, not the isolated events. When people valued not interrupting their daily lives over the health and safety of others, the pandemic worsened. Other countries initiated lockdowns and saved many lives, but the US didn’t. When forest fires broke out, former president Trump blamed forest management instead of climate change. It’s the ignorance of considering your own problems more important than ecological or social issues that tears the nation apart and hinders us from coming together to solve these issues. This makes it hard for journalists to emphasize the underlying issues because there will always be an argument over who’s needs take priority.
