Investigative Journalism on Superintendent's Departure

Updated: Feb 26, 2021

Dr. Michael Goddard announced suddenly on February 2nd, 2021 that after two years of being Lovejoy High School's superintendent, he would be leaving the district. The news surprised the community, and I reached out to those around me to see what they had to say. My mother, Kelly Cowan, a leader in the math department in Lovejoy ISD, said that "[she thinks Lovejoy has] a solid foundation, so we're not going to fall apart without him, but I think that him leaving at the end of the year was not good for morale because it's been a hard year anyway". As a member of the staff, I can tell it was important to her that she emphasized that the community will be strong despite Goddard's departure. A student at Lovejoy, Pax Kotra, had similar thoughts. She felt that "most of his impact he had on the students...was while he was still working here, like overhauling the athletics coaches...and I doubt much will change". The tone of her response is very indifferent, and it's clear that she feels this loss will not have much of an impact on the students.
